Detroit Public School Board Should be Dissolved

Following a proposal to transfer control of Detroit’s government-school system from the Detroit Public School Board (which would be dissolved) to the mayor, board member Tyrone Winfrey asked, “What have we done that is so egregious to get rid of our board?” Among the thousands upon thousands of school districts in our country, Detroit’s is arguably the very worst of them all, with at least one recent study showing that the Detroit govenrment-school system’s graduation rate ranks dead last. If Winfrey doesn’t find this deplorable situation — and the board’s responsibility for it — egregious, then his detachment from obvious reality renders him unfit to serve in any government job, including but not limited to dogcatcher.
